Day 1- On-board Versus Off-Camera Flash

Today is Day 1 of 365 days of photos. It's going to be a ridiculously long haul wonderful learning experience.

This is an abstract shot of my acoustic guitar, straight out of camera.

Lighting info after the jump.

It's shot with a tripod-mounted Canon 7D with a Canon 135 mm f/2.0 L lens. EXIF:  Manual mode, 400 ISO, f/5.6, 1/60. Off-camera Nikon SB-26 with a 6x12 softbox attached, manual power at 1/8, and 85mm zoom, camera right triggered by Pocket Wizards.

Below is the same photo with the built-in flash on my 7D.

Notice the difference in lighting patterns. The light from the on-board flash is harsh, and incidentally, it's forced to be from camera left.

Onward and upward.
